Smoke Screen Politics
A lot of you may be asking yourself "Why would anyone be against a Balanced Budget?" Well, I'm not against a balanced budget. But I am against the Balanced Budget Amendment. The reason is that the Balanced Budget Amendment to the Constitution forces the court system to raise taxes, not cut spending. This gives both Democrats and Republicans in Congress someone else to blame for tax increases that they don't have the political will to pass themselves.

Let's get real here. You can't balance the budget by passing a law anymore that you can make the public smarter by passing a law. If they could pass a law to balance the budget, why not pass a law that there's no federal debt? Why not pass a law giving everyone $50,000 cash? Balancing the budget takes smart and tough choices and there is no quick fix solution. It is the job of the Congress and the President to work together and pass a budget that works. That's what we pay them to do. If we pass a Balanced Budget Amendment then what do we need to have a Congress for anyway? It's their job to do the budget and by God with all the money we pay them they better put their nose to the grindstone and do what their paid to do.

And, to a greater extent, the public are cowards too. We all want a quick fix solution. We want the debt to magically go away. Well people, listen up. The debt is real and you owe it and you're going to have to pay for it. During the 80s Reagan/Bush and the Democratic Congress borrowed and spent $12,000 for every man woman and child in America. Reagan/Bush and the Democratic congress are gone, but the debt is still there and is going to be there for a long time to come.
Now the Republicans are running away trying to stick the courts with the problem and they may have enough cowards on the Democratic side to pass it. If you think the Congress are a bunch of crooks, you haven't seen anything yet. The Judiciary is the sleaziest branch of government and are already organizing a government takeover by lawyers. I don't want to see lawyers and judges get any more power and I damn sure don't want to turn the economy over to these sleaze balls. So I'm fighting the Balanced Budget Amendment and hope to find honest people from all parties to join me who are willing to admit that you don't get something for nothing.
This isn't about party politics. The Democrats would rather tax and spend. The Republicans would rather borrow and spend. They're trying to take the easy way out, easy for them that is. This isn't about doing what's right for America, this is all about posing. This is about trying to look like you're doing the right thing. This is about trying to say the right thing to people who really don't know what you're talking about. But this is a real issue and not a sound bite. The national debt can't be solved in three words. You have to do the work!
A Real Balanced Budget Amendment
I'm sure that there's a lot of you who are reading this who still aren't convinced that a Balanced Budget Amendment is a bad idea. You're saying, "Perkel, as usual you make an interesting argument, but you're not going to talk me out of it!" Fine, let's go the other way. You want a Balanced Budget Amendment? Let's talk about doing it for real.
First, Social Security is running in the black. We're paying more in taxes than we're paying out in benefits. The government borrows this money and counts it as part of the government's income. The budget isn't really balanced if they're counting Social Security. That money is supposed to be our retirement money but they're borrowing and spending it now and using it to hide the real deficit.

Next is the issue of enforcement. It is the duty of the Congress and the President to balance the budget, according to the Constitution. It's not up to the Courts to raise taxes. One solution is to state that if the government runs out of money and the Congress and the President haven't agreed to a new balanced budget, then the court has the authority to order the Congress and the President to be jailed until such time as the complete their duty as required by the Constitution. It could be stated that failing to balance the budget is contempt of court and is punishable by fines, imprisonment, or both.
So, for those of you who want a Balanced Budget Amendment, put your money where your mouth is and pass a real one. Let's not fool around with Trent Lott's pansy assed Balanced Budget Amendment that doesn't actually balance the budget. Let's put some real teeth in it and let's have those teeth bite the Congress when they fail to do the job they're getting paid to do. Are you with me now?
